Netflix Surpasses 31 Million Domestic Subscribers

Netflix’s Q3 earnings report is out and unsurprisingly things are on the up for the streaming service. Reports surfaced earlier today saying that Netflix in Q3 has surpassed HBO in terms of paid US subscribers; these reports were gathered via analytics data and not from Netflix direct data. However, according to Netflix’s Q3 report, the streaming giant is officially beating HBO in paid subscribers with a marginally higher 29.93 million paid members over HBO’s reported 28.7 million.

As we all expected, Netflix remains tight-lipped about the performance of its original series, although the company does mention that original show “Orange is the New Black” is the streaming service’s most-watched series ever. Netflix alludes to the fact that “Orange is the New Black,” — again, no hard numbers here — has viewership on par with successful shows on cable and broadcast TV.

In addition, Netflix mentions its continued desire to work with cable providers, specifically citing its recent deal with Virgin Media’s TiVO set-top. Netflix writes, “We are open to more of these integrations with cable set-tops around the world, but given the fragmented technology footprints, we think it will be many years before cable set-top boxes match Internet set-top boxes for Netflix streaming volume.”

With aspirations to become “the next HBO” ever-present, Netflix signs off its Q3 earnings report stating that they have a long way to go before reaching the home entertainment company’s “114 million global member count.”
